Car hits truck; 1 dead, 1 hurt
Two sets of emergency lightswere flashing when a Chevrolet Camaro driver lost control on Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach early Friday and rammed a Road Ranger truck, authorities said.
The Camaro’s driver, Jose Alvarez Rodriguez, 26, of West Palm Beach, was critically injured and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said.
His 22-year-old passenger, Gretel Maria Mendez-Vega, died at the scene.
Itwas 3:13 a.m. and theRoad Ranger truck, a 2017 Isuzu, was parked in the median behind a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser. Both had emergency lights activated when the driver of the Camaro “lost control and slid sideways,” said highway patrol spokesman Sgt. MarkWysocky.
When the Camaro rammed the truck, it in turn hit the rear end of the cruiser, a 2014 Dodge Charger, Wysocky said.
The truck driver was not injured. The trooper, Cedric Mitchell, had minor injuries and was taken to JFK Medical Center, Wysocky said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
