Car hits truck; 1 dead, 1 hurt

Two sets of emer­gency lightswere flash­ing when a Chevro­let Ca­maro driver lost con­trol on In­ter­state 95 in West Palm Beach early Fri­day and rammed a Road Ranger truck, au­thor­i­ties said.

The Ca­maro’s driver, Jose Al­varez Ro­driguez, 26, of West Palm Beach, was crit­i­cally in­jured and taken to St. Mary’s Hospi­tal, a Florida High­way Pa­trol spokesman said.

His 22-year-old pas­sen­ger, Gre­tel Maria Mendez-Vega, died at the scene.

It­was 3:13 a.m. and theRoad Ranger truck, a 2017 Isuzu, was parked in the me­dian be­hind a Florida High­way Pa­trol cruiser. Both had emer­gency lights ac­ti­vated when the driver of the Ca­maro “lost con­trol and slid side­ways,” said high­way pa­trol spokesman Sgt. MarkWysocky.

When the Ca­maro rammed the truck, it in turn hit the rear end of the cruiser, a 2014 Dodge Charger, Wysocky said.

The truck driver was not in­jured. The trooper, Cedric Mitchell, had mi­nor in­juries and was taken to JFK Med­i­cal Cen­ter, Wysocky said.

The cause of the crash re­mains un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
