LHP Mike Montgomery (2.26 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (4.19, 1.40): Volquez struggled for a second start in a row (after an earlier run of dominance) Tuesday against the Nationals, allowing six runs in 4 2⁄ innings. In his 3 past two games, he has walked nine batters and struck out seven. Volquez’s home/road splits are remarkably even. He has allowed 18 earned runs in 38 2⁄ for a 4.19 ERA both at 3 Marlins Park and at away ballparks. At home, though, he has a 1.32 WHIP, a bit better than his 1.47 road mark. … Montgomery moved into the rotation shortly after recording a3 1⁄3- inning save against the Marlins in Chicago on June 5. In three starts since, he has a 2.40 ERA (four earned in 15 innings) and 1.20 WHIP. In those games, Montgomery has maxed out at 88 pitches, tossing 75 in his most recent outing (six scoreless against the Padres Tuesday).
