Julian Melchiori signs to play in Springfield
Veteran joining crowded group of defenders
The Florida Panthers added to their depth on defense by signing defenseman Julian Melchiori to a one-year, two-way contract on Friday morning.
Melchiori will join the blue line with Panthers AH L affiliate Springfield after spending parts of seven season sin the Winnipeg organization. Mel ch io rip lay ed for Winnipeg AHL affiliate Manitoba last season, racking up14 points in 49 games.
The26-year-old left-handed shot has played in 324 career AHL games and 30 more in the NHL. He was an alternate captain in Manitoba last year.
Melchiori joins a group of defensemen in Springfield that should include Josh Brown, Jacob MacDonald, Ludwig Bystrom, Thomas Schemitsch and Riley Stillman. Brown was the last defenseman cut during training camp last season while MacDonald led all AHL defensemen in scoring with Binghamton. Stillman will be playing his first professional season.
The Panthers defensive group in the NHL is a crowded one also. They return all seven defensemen (Keith Yandle, Aaron Ekblad, Mike Matheson, Mark Pysyk, MacKenzie Wee gar, Alexander Petro vic and Ian McCoshen) that played last year, and also signed Russian Bogdan Kiselevich.
McCoshen and Kiselevich can play in the AHL without having to pass through waivers first. ■ Springfield signed forward
Harry Zolnierczyk to an AHL contract on Thursday. Zolnierczyk was in Panthers’ training camp last year before he was cut and signed with Milwaukee in the AHL. He’s played in 354 AHL games and 84 NHL games with the Flyers, Penguins, Islanders, Ducks and Predators.
