Ju­lian Mel­chiori signs to play in Spring­field

Vet­eran join­ing crowded group of de­fend­ers

The Florida Pan­thers added to their depth on de­fense by sign­ing de­fense­man Ju­lian Mel­chiori to a one-year, two-way con­tract on Fri­day morn­ing.

Mel­chiori will join the blue line with Pan­thers AH L af­fil­i­ate Spring­field af­ter spend­ing parts of seven sea­son sin the Win­nipeg or­ga­ni­za­tion. Mel ch io rip lay ed for Win­nipeg AHL af­fil­i­ate Man­i­toba last sea­son, rack­ing up14 points in 49 games.

The26-year-old left-handed shot has played in 324 ca­reer AHL games and 30 more in the NHL. He was an al­ter­nate cap­tain in Man­i­toba last year.

Mel­chiori joins a group of de­fense­men in Spring­field that should in­clude Josh Brown, Ja­cob MacDon­ald, Lud­wig Bys­trom, Thomas Schemitsch and Ri­ley Still­man. Brown was the last de­fense­man cut dur­ing train­ing camp last sea­son while MacDon­ald led all AHL de­fense­men in scor­ing with Bing­ham­ton. Still­man will be play­ing his first pro­fes­sional sea­son.

The Pan­thers de­fen­sive group in the NHL is a crowded one also. They re­turn all seven de­fense­men (Keith Yan­dle, Aaron Ek­blad, Mike Math­e­son, Mark Pysyk, MacKen­zie Wee gar, Alexan­der Petro vic and Ian McCoshen) that played last year, and also signed Rus­sian Bog­dan Kise­le­vich.

McCoshen and Kise­le­vich can play in the AHL with­out hav­ing to pass through waivers first. ■ Spring­field signed for­ward

Harry Zol­nier­czyk to an AHL con­tract on Thurs­day. Zol­nier­czyk was in Pan­thers’ train­ing camp last year be­fore he was cut and signed with Mil­wau­kee in the AHL. He’s played in 354 AHL games and 84 NHL games with the Fly­ers, Pen­guins, Is­lan­ders, Ducks and Preda­tors.
