Sun Sentinel Palm Beach Edition - Showtime - Palm Beach - - ART -

Here’s how the Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach will celebrate the recent arrival of spring: by filling the entire museum with flowers. There are Swarovski crystal-bejeweled flowers, giant dandelions that dangle upside-down from the museum’s ceiling and Andy Warhol’s early ink drawings of flowers in cups. Artist David Spiller’s pop art painting “Tell It to the Stars” depicts a pair of flowers in bloom. One Cornell gallery contains artist Amanda McCavour’s “Floating Garden,” a cascade of 1,000 embroidered daisies, buttercups and asters assembled into a colorful tapestry on the ceiling. (Each flower took hours to embroider, and the project took five years, McCavour says in a prepared statement.) The verdant lives of plants are in the spotlight for “Flora,” a flower-themed exhibition opening today at the Cornell. The show rounds up works by 30 contemporary artists, including pieces that incorporate unusual materials, such as surfboards, dyed ficus leaves and logos of luxury-apparel brands. The installation “Enchanted Forest,” from South Florida artists Diane Arrieta and Cheryl Maeder, fills one gallery with a multimedia installation of flowers, film, photography, sculpture and sound art.
