Bringing home the gold
While their fellow Americans were winning medals at the Beijing Olympics, a group of more than 100 local teens captured medals of their own while participating in the 2008 JCC Maccabi Games. The boys and girls of the Levis JCC Mitchell Dobbin Maccabi Team, known locally as Team Boca, competed in a variety of sports at the recent events held in San Diego, California, and Akron, Ohio, this past month.
Many of the teens on the Mitchell Dobbin Maccabi Team have represented the Levis JCC for numerous years, as well as many of the volunteer coaches who accompany them, donating their time to help the young athletes to succeed.
The Olympic-style Maccabi Games, which have been held annually since 1982, are held each year in multiple sites throughout the nation with more than 5,000 Jewish teens participating. It is the largest organized sports programs for Jewish teenagers in the world and is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Association of North America, Maccabi World Union, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel and Maccabi Canada. Jewish teenagers, ages 13 to 16, are encouraged to try out for the 2009 Levis JCC Mitchell Dobbin Maccabi Team, which will be participating in the JCC Maccabi Games next year in San Francisco. There will be an informational meeting this winter, with tryouts beginning in February.
