Everything I know about golf I learned from Caddyshack. Well, that is not completely true, but I have a spotty knowledge of the rules. Although I have been a spectator at many golf tournaments, the closest I have come to participating in the game (other than playing Gooney Golf at that place on 441 – natives, you know the one I’m referring to) is driving the beverage cart in the Bobby Bowden Golf Classic – a super fun job I might add. With that said, it’s time again to kick-off the 4th annual Comcast Cares Golf Classic, an event which raised $120,000 last year to benefit South Florida. If you haven’t heard about it until now, the event is simple: Playing golf + partying for a good cause = a day well spent. That’s all there is to it. So to announce this year’s beneficiaries…drum roll please… proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund and the Broward Performing Arts Foundation to help children and families in our community. Comcast has a longstanding commitment to serving the communities where their employees and customers live and work, and the Comcast Cares Golf Classic is just one of the many ways they give back. They are one of our community’s biggest supporters, and we’re thrilled to be a part of the tournament’s history.
The big day takes place Monday, December 8 at Grande Oaks Golf Club – yes, the very same course where Caddyshack was filmed. See the connection here?
So with the December date a few months away, I have to get this golf thing together. It just so happens I am going to golfer’s heaven next month - Pebble Beach - so I will be sure to take notes. I mean, if you’re going to go all out you might as well start with the best!
And fittingly enough, smart tartan, clubby argyle and prep-owned plaid just happen to be in the spotlight for the fall fashion trend report - it’s the perfect fairway fashion statement. Even at New York Fashion Week, the tried-and-true patterns showed up in the fall collections of Lacoste with their sporty golf gear in blackand-white combos.
I can’t tell you how excited I am that Comcast chose the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund as one of the beneficiaries and I know I speak for my friends at the Broward Performing Arts Foundation when I say a huge thanks to Comcast. And a special shout out to the many sponsors who have come on board so far: the presenting sponsor, Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler, Underground Specialists Inc., Rainbow Networks, Arris Corp, Publix, JM Family Enterprises, Inc, Groupware International, CableNet Services, Cypress Communications, Pulse Pilates, Edwin Watts, Premier Beverage, Michael Murphy and Suzanne Barton, Comcast Sports Southeast, Chima Brazilian Steakhouse and A&E Networks. We know it will be the best year yet. We won’t let you down!
So to all you golfers, or those like me who are game for a fun (and fashionable) adventure, this is a chance to help in a time of need and have a terrific day. I hope you will consider participating in this fabulous event to raise some much-needed money for two great charities. Even if you can’t make it, please spread the word to every golfer you know. Let’s show how charitable the golf community can be. So join me on the links - and if all else fails, there’s always the beverage cart!
