AUTO RACING: Ryan Newman gambled and skipped a tire-changing pit stop to take the lead from deep in the pack and held on for a surprise victory in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race in Avondale, Ariz. Newman, who broke a 127-race winless streak, held off Kyle Larsen, the secondplac­e finisher for the third straight race.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Washington moved quickly to fill its coaching vacancy, hiring longtime Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins. Washington announced the move four days after Lorenzo Romar was fired after 15 seasons at his alma mater. Hopkins played at Syracuse from 1989-93 and returned to the staff there in 1996. He was named the successor to Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim in June 2015 but jumped at the chance to coach in the Pac-12.

GOLF: Marc Leishman holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole for the lead, and he stayed there with two tough pars to win the Arnold Palmer Invitation­al in Orlando, Fla., and earn a trip to the Masters. Kevin Kisner had a three-shot lead at the turn, but he didn’t make a birdie over his final 11 holes and finished tied with Charley Hoffman for second, one shot back at 10 under . ... Tom Lehman took advantage of senior newcomer Steve Stricker’s late mistakes to win the Tucson Conquistad­ores Classic in Tucson, Ariz., for his 10th PGA Tour Champions victory. Two strokes behind Stricker with three holes to play, Lehman closed with two birdies and a par for a 7-under 66 and a onestroke victory over Stricker . ... Anna Nordqvist shot a 4-under 68 to hold off Ariya Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis and In Gee Chun by two strokes to win the LPGA’s Bank of Hope Founders Cup in Phoenix.

SKIING: Andre Myhrer of Sweden won the slalom at the World Cup Finals in Aspen, Colo., when first-run leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria lost speed near the finish. Myhrer navigated the course in a combined time of 1 minute, 27.97 seconds, holding off Felix Neureuther of Germany by 0.14 seconds. Austria’s Michael Matt was third and Hirscher — who had already clinched season titles in slalom and giant slalom — was fourth . ... Federica Brignone led an Italian sweep in the giant slalom at the World Cup Finals, but Tessa Worley of France held on for her first season title.

TENNIS: Roger Federer defeated Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 to win a record-tying fifth BNP Paribas Open title in Indian Wells, Calif. At 35 years and seven months, Federer became the oldest champion in the desert tournament’s history. In the women’s final, Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4. Vesnina beat No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber and No. 12 Venus Williams on her way to the title, the biggest of her career at age 30.

ALSO: USA Hockey and representa­tives of the women’s national team will meet Monday to discuss a wage dispute that could lead to players boycotting the upcoming world championsh­ip. John Langel, a lawyer for the players, told The Associated Press that they’ll meet with USA Hockey officials in Philadelph­ia two days before the scheduled start of training camp. The Women’s World Championsh­ip begins March 31 in Plymouth, Mich . ... Cayley Mercer scored two goals as Clarkson captured the NCAA women’s hockey national championsh­ip with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin in St. Charles, Mo.
