Chimp danced in ’80s videos; now he paints

- By Johnny Diaz Staff writer

Remember Bubbles? The pet chimp that Michael Jackson was often photographed with, and that appeared in his music videos in the 1980s, now is an artist.

Some of Bubbles’ paintings and those of other apes, including some celebrity orangutans and chimps, will be on display and for sale for 10 days during the “Apes That Paint” exhibit at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami-Dade County. A free opening reception is set for 6-10 p.m. July 21.

The exhibit will feature about 60 pieces of original art, and each painting will go for $300 to $2,000, said gallery owner Adam Brand.

Proceeds from sales will benefit the Center for Great Apes, a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimps that are unable to live in the wild. The nonprofit center has 100 acres in Wauchula, which is southwest of Orlando. Bub-
