‘Venice of America’ polluted

Sun Sentinel Palm Beach Edition - - VOICES & OPINION - Don Crites, Pompano Beach

Fort Lauderdale is becoming the Lake O of South Florida. Twenty million gallons of raw sewage has spilled into waterways in the last two years due to the malfeasance of our city commissioners and the mayor. They would rather brag about freezing the property tax rate, raise water/sewage rates, yet divert $106 million of those collected monies to cover unrelated city budget deficits.

Almost $800 million has been paid out in damage claims to our residents. Now we hear that there is a funding gap over the next five years of $151 million for sewer projects and $191 million for water projects, and next year they may have to borrow up to $200 million to tackle the biggest projects.

Meanwhile, these same leaders are still pursuing the $195 million Wave streetcar project that will serve only a select few residents on its proposed 2.7 mile track. Let’s hope the electric streetcars can operate in high water and smelly sewage. Great job, commissioners.
