Does president’s visit aid or hurt relief effort?

Sun Sentinel Palm Beach Edition - - VOICES & OPINION - Michele Gulick, Boynton Beach

The president and first lady made a trip to Texas on Tuesday. While I understand that it is his duty as our president to ensure relief efforts are ongoing, I question the timing of his trip.

I am sure there was a need for extensive security, which I can only assume no doubt included local law enforcement authorities, but is that really a good use of this group of people? Wouldn’t it better serve the community if the manpower used to secure the president and first lady was actually used to help the many stranded and homeless people of the greater Houston area? I wonder just what the president was thinking when he made the decision to go there so early in the relief effort. No doubt another photo opportunity.
