A vacant strip of land meant to become Tamarac’s downtown is on the verge of construction.

The $80 million project — known as Tamarac Village — calls for the development of 401 rental apartments within 13 fourstory buildings on land situated at the northeastern corner of Northwest 94th Avenue and Commercial Boulevard. It includes a two-story clubhouse for residents and three buildings for commercial space, totaling more than 44,000 square feet. There also will be land set aside for a city park.

Tamarac spokeswoman Elise Boston said groundbreaking is expected in the next few months. The entire project won’t be finished until late 2019.

“I’m delighted we are as close as we are,” Mayor Harry Dressler said. “It’s an immense project, and it takes a huge amount of time. I’ve been patient for years, I can be patient for a few more months.”

Dressler said the plans will allow people “to come and meet and eat and do things.”

John K. Markey, of JKM Developers, said through his assistant that he would not comment on the project.

Tamarac Village has been more than a decade in the making. It originally was envisioned to be called Main Street.

Between 2006 and 2013, the city spent $16.6 million to buy 17 properties for the city center, including empty land, an old bank building and a synagogue.

The vision has changed over time: Instead of stretching to University Drive, the project is now confined to the border of Pine Island Road. Plans to build an overpass to ease pedestrian traffic were scratched, as was an early plan to assess a handful of surrounding businesses, including a nursing home and hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for it all, which quickly became a public relations nightmare for the city.
