Concert on Miami Beach to be part of the Orange Bowl festivities.

The Dave Matthews Band will play a free concert on Miami Beach on Friday, Dec. 28, as part of Capital One Beach Bash events preceding the Orange Bowl college football game. Pop-rock band Walk the Moon will be the opening act.

With gates opening at 4 p.m., admission will be first-come, first-served for the concert and related festivities, though Capital One cardholders have access to a front-of-the-stage lounge. Capital One says information on tickets for the lounge will be shared on its Twitter (@CapitalOne) and Facebook accounts (Facebook.com/CapitalOne).

The concert takes place the night before the Dec. 29 Orange Bowl game at Hard Rock Stadium, this year an important semifinal game in the college football playoff.

In years past, the Capital One Beach Bash has filled Lummus Park (10th Street and Ocean Drive) with fans from the participating teams, beach games, vendors, food and beverages, and a beer garden.

Teams participating in the college football playoff have yet to be determined, but the current frontrunners include Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan, Georgia and Oklahoma, with an outside shot for Ohio State. Clearly a lot for Sunshine State football fans to hate on that list.

Which makes the selection of the Dave Matthews Band all the more welcome. DMB is massively popular in South Florida, one of the markets that historically has gotten two shows on a tour stop. The band’s two July concerts at Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach — on the tour supporting the album “Come Tomorrow” — were quick sellouts.

Capital One Beach Bash concerts typically are streamed via the WatchESPN app, with portions of the concerts shown during halftime of the Orange Bowl broadcast.
