Reg­is­tered sex of­fender charged with rape

EAST NEW MAR­KET — A reg­is­tered sex of­fender has been charged with sec­ond-de­gree rape af­ter he al­legedly had sex­ual in­ter­course with a teenage girl.

Ac­cord­ing to Mary­land State Po­lice, Robert Ed­ward Sears III, 35, of East New Mar­ket was charged with sec­ond-de­gree rape, sec­ond-, third- and four-de­gree sex of­fenses, sec­ond-de­gree child abuse, sex abuse of a mi­nor and sec­ond-de­gree as­sault. Sears is be­ing held with­out bond at the Dorch­ester County De­ten­tion Cen­ter.

Po­lice said an in­ves­ti­ga­tion be­gan when Mary­land State Po­lice Crim­i­nal En­force­ment Di­vi­sion re­ceived in­for­ma­tion about Sears hav­ing sex­ual in­ter­course with a 13-year-old girl. Po­lice said de­tec­tives in­ter viewed the girl and col­lected ev­i­dence for the case.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said a search and seizure war­rant was granted by a dis­trict court judge and ex­e­cuted on Sear’s home on Fri­day, Aug. 11. Po­lice said ev­i­dence was col­lected on scene link­ing Sears, and he was ar­rested with­out in­ci­dent.

Po­lice said Sears is a reg­is­tered sex of­fender in the State of Mary­land and is on pro­ba­tion for a 2010 rape con­vic­tion con­cern­ing an­other child.

The Mary­land State Po­lice Crim­i­nal En­force­ment Di­vi­sion, Up­per Shore Re­gion, is com­prised of in­ves­ti­ga­tors as­signed to the re­gion. The re­gion con­sists of Kent, Queen Anne’s, Tal­bot, Caro­line and Dorch­ester coun­ties.
