Registered sex offender charged with rape
EAST NEW MARKET — A registered sex offender has been charged with second-degree rape after he allegedly had sexual intercourse with a teenage girl.
According to Maryland State Police, Robert Edward Sears III, 35, of East New Market was charged with second-degree rape, second-, third- and four-degree sex offenses, second-degree child abuse, sex abuse of a minor and second-degree assault. Sears is being held without bond at the Dorchester County Detention Center.
Police said an investigation began when Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division received information about Sears having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Police said detectives inter viewed the girl and collected evidence for the case.
Investigators said a search and seizure warrant was granted by a district court judge and executed on Sear’s home on Friday, Aug. 11. Police said evidence was collected on scene linking Sears, and he was arrested without incident.
Police said Sears is a registered sex offender in the State of Maryland and is on probation for a 2010 rape conviction concerning another child.
The Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, Upper Shore Region, is comprised of investigators assigned to the region. The region consists of Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester counties.
