Party raises $33,000 for men­tal health pro­grams

CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County Men­tal Health Com­mit­tee’s Spurs & Spir­its Barn Party was a suc­cess, rais­ing more than $33,000 to ben­e­fit lo­cal men­tal health pro­grams.

Grove Creek Mule Farm in Centreville was the set­ting for the down­home event. More than 130 at­ten­dees were greeted with the sig­na­ture drink for the evening — Moscow Mules

As chicken was grilled on an out­door pit by bar­be­cue mas­ter Adam Shi­ley and his team, guests en­joyed hors d’oeu­vres, in­clud­ing but­ter­nut squash soup from the Inn at the Ch­e­sa­peake Bay Beach Club.

Line dance caller Mike Dey, with the help of DJ Big Al, brought the barn alive with coun­try line danc­ing.

Guests were treated to a buf­fet fit for cow­boys and cow­girls, pre­pared by the mem­bers of the Queen Anne’s County Men­tal Health Com­mit­tee, and smoked brisket by the Nar­rows Restau­rant.

At­ten­dees bid on a wide range of silent auc­tion items through­out the evening, and the live auc­tion brought about some lively bid­ding.

Jan­ice Lyon’s fa­mous warm ap­ple crisp for dessert capped off the evening.

The event also gen­er­ated par­tic­i­pa­tion from busi­nesses and in­di­vid­u­als as spon­sors: Anne Arun­del Med­i­cal Cen­ter, Bay Area As­so­ci­a­tion of Real­tors, The Marks­men Com­pany, Ch­e­sa­peake Laser & Skin Care Cen­ter, Freestate and Son In­sur­ance Agency, The Flower Shop, Bernard and Betty Hardesty Char­i­ta­ble Foun­da­tion Inc., Kram & McCarthy, Queen­stown Bank, Diane and Pete Pap­pas, Rose­land Nurs­eries, Shore United Bank, Merry Tobin, Alexis Thomas and Val­liant & As­so­ciates Wealth Man­age­ment.

QACMHC’s next event is the Old Bags Lun­cheon sched­uled for Fri­day, Sept. 14, 2018, at Prospect Bay Coun­try Club.

The pro­ceeds from QACMHC’s events sup­port those mem­bers of the com­mu­nity who need as­sis­tance cop­ing with men­tal ill­ness. This year, more than $42,000 in grants was awarded to six lo­cal men­tal health re­source or­ga­ni­za­tions.
