Easton Rotary Club tours
EASTON — The Easton Rotary Club toured The Star Democrat Wednesday, Oct.
4, also hosting the Democratic congressional candidate for Maryland’s 1st District, Jesse Colvin.
Club members started the day with a presentation from Adams Publishing Group Regional President David Fike, who briefly discussed specific operations of the company.
Fike said The Star Democrat is one of the 25 oldest newspapers in the country, while the company as a whole owns publications in 20 states. More than
2,300 people are employed through Adams Publishing Group, while most decisions about the company are made by local managers, Fike said.
Fike said the company’s strategy, launched four years ago, has been to purchase newspapers in small, rural communities. The Star Democrat is one of the larger paid newspapers within Adams Publishing Group.
“Every four to six months, we’re buying more groups,” Fike said. “They want to continue to buy in this sector across the United States. It’s still got a great bottom line, it’s still got a lot of community support when you get down to these local communities, and in most cases, it’s the primary source of news still today about what’s going on in the community.”
Fike said Adams Publishing Group owns a publication in more than half of the Maryland counties and, for his specific region, has additional publications in Delaware and Virginia. About a million people a week read content produced by Adams Publishing Group within this region, he said.
“A quick overview: 17 different newspapers in my group, nine magazines, nine websites, five mobile apps,” Fike said. “We have a huge digital readership on all of our digital platforms.”
Fike said recently, the company has invested $600,000 into the printing press operation. This money was used to expand the capacity of the web press,
