MASARYKTOWN — The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has identified the fugitive deputies shot and killed during a gunfire exchange Wednesday while trying to arrest him on charges of sexual battery of a child.

Deputies said Anthony Wallace, 44, of Spring Hill was driving on Trillium Boulevard just north of County Line Road about 4:50 p.m. when Hernando detectives and deputy U.S. marshals tried to pull him over. After exchanging gunfire with officers, the Sheriff ’s Office said, Wallace died at the scene.

The Sheriff ’s Office declined to release any other details about the shooting. In a video posted to Facebook after the shooting, Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis said Wallace “fired at least once … it was a long gun … and of course, deputies and marshals returned fire.”

The Sheriff’s Office also released the names of the county officers involved: Sgt. Tom Brooks, 49; Sgt. William Power, 39; Detective Willard “Brian” Stephens, 43. Two U.S. marshals who were also involved were not identified. None were injured. All were placed on paid administrative leave.

FLDE records show Wallace had no criminal record in Florida.
