Hechavarria injures hamstring
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Already shorthanded, the Rays lost another frontliner Thursday when SS Adeiny Hechavarria left during the second inning with a right hamstring strain.
Hechavarria was running to first after a leadoff single when he grabbed the back of his right leg, then pretty much headed straight to the dugout .
Hechavarria is the third starter to be sidelined with a muscle-related injury in the past week, following 3B Matt Duffy, who is aiming to return Saturday from right hamstring tightness, and RF Carlos Gomez, who is on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain.
Joey Wendle replaced Hechavarria and went to second base, with Daniel Robertson moving to shortstop.
Hechavarria will be re-evaluated today, though DL stints are pretty much automatic for hamstring strains. If so, the team would have to at least consider calling up top prospect Willy Adames from Triple A, though it would be reluctant to start his service time clock. Another option is to bank on Duffy returning and use Robertson at shortstop and call up a utility player.
Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, shown here during a game last week, hurts his hamstring in the second inning of Thursday’s game against the Angels.
