Area teams gather for Tiger Classic

- By Josh Richert Sports Editor

Fifteen teams will be represented today at the 9th annual Tiger Classic golf tournament at Texarkana Country Club.

Joining the host Tigers of Texas High are teams from Pleasant Grove, Argyle, Byron Nelson, Edward S. Marcus Flower Mound, Grapevine, Denton Guyer, Highland Park, Dallas Jesuit, Mansfield Legacy, McKinney Boyd, Rockwall, Southlake Carroll, and Trinity Christian Academy of Addison. Carthage has medalists entered as well.

Round 1 tee times will be from 7:3011:30 a.m., and Saturday's final round will be at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The awards ceremony will be at 1:15 p.m.

“We had a big 54-hole event last week, and seven of the 15 teams here played in Fort Worth,” Tigers coach Jay Brewer said. “This is as strong a field as we've ever had. For high school golf in Texas, there's not an event this nice in the state, I believe, and there's nothing similar to ours this side of Lake Ray Hubbard.”

Texas High returned just two starters from last season, including Matt Prieskorn, who is the defending individual medalist. Prior to last fall, the Tigers had won the Classic two years in a row.

Playing for the Tigers will be Will Patterson, Quentin Green, Ryan Hall, Zayne Madden and Matt Prieskorn. The Hawks will have Griffin Young, Jackson Giles, Jathan White, Tyler Sutherland and Braxton Watkins. THS' Alex Davis and PG's Ray Norton will play as medalists.

“The golf community really comes through for us to host this event,” Brewer said. “We have sponsors that take care of the hotels. We feed the teams a nice team dinner tomorrow night; it's run just like a college event.

“That's how we get all the good teams to come in. I've got a waiting list for next year already.”
