PG gets set to take on Bullard

HALLSVILLE, TEXAS— Tempo is im­per­a­tive in mu­sic and in sports.

When Pleas­ant Grove tips off against Bullard in a Class 4A area round play­off game to­day at Hallsville's Bob­cat Gym at 8 p.m., the Lady Hawks will try to con­trol the pace.

“We need to play at our speed,” Pleas­ant Grove head coach Ja­son Bos­ton said. “We need it to be a fast game, and we must get things out of our full-court press, turnovers as well as keep­ing a fast pace.”

Starters for PG are ju­nior for­wards Made­line Haak and Monique Walker, sopho­more guard Grace Pick­el­man, and fresh­men guards Sha'Ne­qua Henry and Ashanti Lev­ingston.

The young Hawk team is well con­di­tioned and has good speed.

“As long as we get up and down the floor fast, the game will play to our ad­van­tage,” Bos­ton said.

Bullard earned a spot in the area round when it routed Carthage 80-38 in the bi-dis­trict round. The Pan­therettes are coached by Barry Gill and come in with a record of 29-6. Last year's Bullard team went 31-7 and earned a trip to re­gion­als.

“The Pan­therettes are a well-coached team and do a good job fun­da­men­tally,” Bos­ton said. “They are ac­cu­rate shoot­ers and re­turn four starters from last year's squad.

“Al­lie Kir­gan is their 6-foot-1 post. She is good and is solid in­side. They have many weapons, and they shoot the 3s well. They have a very good team.”

Bullard's starters are Kir­gan, a ju­nior, se­niors Hannah Lloyd, Lau­ren Zachry, Abby Story, and sopho­more Syd­ney Fos­ter.

The win­ner of tonight's game will play ei­ther Dis­trict 13-4A win­ner Ma­bank or Dis­trict 15-4A third-place team Tyler Chapel Hill in the quar­ter­fi­nals.
