PG gets set to take on Bullard
HALLSVILLE, TEXAS— Tempo is imperative in music and in sports.
When Pleasant Grove tips off against Bullard in a Class 4A area round playoff game today at Hallsville's Bobcat Gym at 8 p.m., the Lady Hawks will try to control the pace.
“We need to play at our speed,” Pleasant Grove head coach Jason Boston said. “We need it to be a fast game, and we must get things out of our full-court press, turnovers as well as keeping a fast pace.”
The Lady Hawks defeated Emory Rains 84-65 in the
Starters for PG are junior forwards Madeline Haak and Monique Walker, sophomore guard Grace Pickelman, and freshmen guards Sha'Nequa Henry and Ashanti Levingston.
The young Hawk team is well conditioned and has good speed.
“As long as we get up and down the floor fast, the game will play to our advantage,” Boston said.
Bullard earned a spot in the area round when it routed Carthage 80-38 in the bi-district round. The Pantherettes are coached by Barry Gill and come in with a record of 29-6. Last year's Bullard team went 31-7 and earned a trip to regionals.
“The Pantherettes are a well-coached team and do a good job fundamentally,” Boston said. “They are accurate shooters and return four starters from last year's squad.
“Allie Kirgan is their 6-foot-1 post. She is good and is solid inside. They have many weapons, and they shoot the 3s well. They have a very good team.”
Bullard's starters are Kirgan, a junior, seniors Hannah Lloyd, Lauren Zachry, Abby Story, and sophomore Sydney Foster.
The winner of tonight's game will play either District 13-4A winner Mabank or District 15-4A third-place team Tyler Chapel Hill in the quarterfinals.
