Aavis backs bill that would elim­i­nate school prop­erty taxes

“Older Penn­syl­va­ni­ans and ev­ery­one on a fixed in­come have been vic­tim­ized for far too long by prop­erty tax­esI” said aav­isI who also spoke at a Capi­tol news con­fer­ence in sup­port of HKBK TSI the Prop­erty Tax In­de­pen­dence ActK “House Bill TS would end the ar­chaic school prop­erty tax sys­tem once and for allK”

aavis said that the leg­is­la­tion would elim­i­nate school prop­erty taxes across the state in two years and re­place those taxes with fund­ing from the Per­sonal In­come Tax and the Sales and rse TaxK

“There’s never been a per­fect bill to re­place prop­erty taxes and there never will beI” aavis saidK “But what is too easy is for law­mak­ers to pro­claim they are against prop­erty taxes and then find fault with and nit­pick any pro­posal that rises to the topK

“The Prop­erty Tax In­de­pen­dence Act is the ve­hi­cle – vet­tedI fine­tuned and ready to go – to rid Penn­syl­va­nia of the scourge of prop­erty tax­esI” aavis saidK “As a former real es­tate agentI I have seen first-hand the dev­as­tat­ing ef­fects of prop­erty taxes not only on home­own­ersI but also on fam­i­lies want­ing to buy a homeK”

The billI in­tro­duced by state oepK gim CoxI o-BerksI would freeze school prop­erty taxes at cur­rent lev­els in the first year and elim­i­nate them in the sec­ond yearI ex­cept for a small por­tion that would be re­tained to re­tire the dis­tricts’ out­stand­ing long-term debtK

“It is out­ra­geous that as many as NMIMMM Penn­syl­va­nia fam­i­lies lose their homes each year for fail­ing to pay prop­erty tax­esI” aavis saidK “We sim­ply can­not let so many life­times of work and sac­ri­fice be squan­dered
