DPS: Naked man causes I-17 mayhem

- BRIEANNA J FRANK

A naked man driving with his 4-yearold son rammed an Arizona trooper’s car before crashing his vehicle along an Interstate 17 embankment Sunday morning, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

The man was identified by officials as Montrais Boyd Sr. of Westminster, California.

On Sunday morning, troopers responded to a report of a possible domestic-violence call with a man in the median of the northbound lanes of I-17 at Milepost 325.

The trooper arrived and discovered a black BMW sedan that was blocking traffic in one lane. Boyd, who was naked, ran toward the trooper’s vehicle and struck the patrol car with his fists, according to the DPS.

The trooper drove away and stopped in front of the sedan, finding the 4-yearold inside.

Boyd got back into his vehicle and rammed the trooper’s patrol vehicle several times before fleeing the scene and going the wrong way on I-17, driving north in the southbound lanes for more than a mile, the DPS said.

Boyd then lost control of his vehicle, traveled into the shoulder and re-entered the southbound lanes before moving back to the northbound lanes of the freeway.

The trooper was not able to keep up with Boyd because his vehicle was damaged, and he lost sight of the BMW around Milepost 329, the DPS said.

The BMW ran into an embankment and rolled over at Milepost 331, allowing officials to take Boyd into custody without further incident, the DPS said.

The 16-year-veteran trooper sustained “moderate injury” and was home recovering, the DPS said.

Both Boyd and his son were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for minor bruises and abrasions and were released Sunday. The boy was reunited with his mother at the hospital.

Officials contacted the Arizona Department of Child Safety to assist with the investigation, the DPS said.

Boyd was booked into the Coconino County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument, felony endangerment, child abuse and criminal damage.
