The teams: Tucson Cholla, Tucson Desert View, Tucson Empire, Tucson Flowing Wells, Marana Mountain View, Tucson Rincon.
The favorite: Mountain View. Losing WR Josh Hart (transferred to Salpointe) hurts, but this team is deep enough to still come out on top. Watch out: Rincon. Maybe the move down from 6A will fuel the fire.
The star: Mountain View LB Calib McRae, senior, 6-1, 219. Powerful presence in the middle of the defense, forcing turnovers. Key date: Aug. 16 -Mountain View plays host to Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge in the first game of the season for anybody in the state and the only game played on Thursday.
The teams: Sierra Vista Buena, Ironwood Ridge, Vail Cienega, Marana, Nogales, Tucson Sunnyside.
The favorite: Cienega. If a quarterback emerges, this team could do as well as last year.
Watch out: Marana. QB Trenton Bourguet is on the verge of becoming most prolific passer in Southern Arizona history. The star: Cienega WR/ DB/KR Terrell Hayward, senior, 5-10, 160. Moving this game changer from corner to safety will make him a greater factor on defense.
Key date: Sept. 7 -- Cienega travels to play 5A defending state champion Peoria Centennial.
