5 THINGS TO KNOW
1. Dale’s Day in Alabama: Not surprisingly, Gov. Kay Ivey has declared this Sunday in Alabama as “Dale Earnhardt Jr. Day” as Junior — who turned 43 on Tuesday — makes his last Talladega start in the Cup series. (We’ll add the necessary qualifier that he can always change his mind.) Earnhardt (right) has yet to win a race this season, but in case he does, expect the internet to go crazy.
■ Alabama 500, 2 p.m. Sunday, NBC 3. ACC showdown tonight: Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey was helpless last October as he watched Clemson dismantle the Orange in convincing fashion, a 54-0 beatdown just another step on the way to a national championship. Dungey was knocked out of that game in the first quarter after a hit to the helmet and missed the rest of the season. Healthy again, he’s eager to show what he and the Orange offense can do when the second-ranked Tigers (6-0, 4-0 ACC) visit the Carrier Dome tonight. Syracuse (3-3, 1-1) is coming off a home victory against Pittsburgh .
■ No. 2 Clemson at Syracuse, 7 p.m., ESPN 4. From the “Go figure” department: Midmajor Troy, which shocked LSU earlier this season in the Tigers’ homecoming game, was upset 19-8 late Wednesday by South Alabama, which came into the game 1-4.
