Homecoming queen killed in crash
Senior at Dawson County High School collides with tractor-trailer just a mile from the school.
A high school homecoming queen was killed early Monday in Dawson County in a crash with a tractor-trailer just a mile from her school.
The accident on Ga. 53 and Buddy Burt Road killed Grace Elizabeth Sheer, 18, of Dawsonville, the Georgia State Patrol said. Sheer was a senior at Dawson County High School.
According to the GSP, Sheer was driving west on the highway in a 2002 Honda CRV and the tractor-trailer was heading east.
As Sheer approached a curve near Buddy Burt Road, she “failed to negotiate the curve,” overcorrected and lost control of the SUV, authorities said.
The Honda veered into eastbound lanes and was hit by the tractor-trailer, according to the GSP. The impact of the crash sent the SUV down an embankment, authorities said.
Truck driver Edwin Kincannon, 42, of Cartersville, was not injured in the wreck.
Both were wearing their seat belts, according to the GSP.
An unrelated accident in Gwinnett County on Friday also resulted in a fatality. A construction worker died after being hit by a car on I-85.
Lamar Ragland, 42, died a day after the accident, Gwinnett County police Cpl. Wilbert Rundles said. Ragland, of Franklin, was removing barrels in preparation to reopen the road when he was struck.
It was in the same area where construction is underway to extend the existing high-occupancy toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road past the Mall of Georgia to Hamilton Mill Road.
“Charges against the driver, Peter Rozboril, will be forthcoming,” Rundles said.
Rozboril’s car hit Ragland, who was wearing a reflective jacket and helmet at the time, trying to exit onto I-985, Rundles said.
Ragland was taken to a hospital in serious condition, and he later died there.
