READERS WRITE Replace Lost Cause monuments with those of victors
As the Lost Cause narrative appears to be taking its last gasps and monuments are coming down, the usual straw man arguments are being rolled out. Those lamenting their endings say their history and heritage are being destroyed in the name of political correctness. What those defending the monuments fail to recognize is the passive acknowledgment anyone passing by a monument must give. This is especially egregious for Black Americans. So here’s a thought. Replace the existing monuments with their Northern counterparts: Jefferson Davis with Lincoln; Lee with Grant; Stonewall with Sherman, and so on. Leave the new monument up for the same number of years as the monument it’s replacing. Let future generations decide by plebiscite if they want to return to the original. After all, the replacements did win the Civil War, preserve democracy and free from slavery roughly half the population of the Confederate States of America. LAWRENCE J. BURNS, NEWNAN
