Running the field for a cause
Orioles’ Chris & Jill Davis are Casey Cares 5K Race Ambassadors
This weekend is your chance to support a very worthy cause AND run on to the field at Oriole Park at Camden Yards (without getting arrested)! The Casey Cares Foundation 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, August 5 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in partnership with Orioles-REACH. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Casey Cares Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non profit that provides personalized, uplifting, and ongoing programs with a special touch to critically-ill children and their family members throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis and his wife Jill Davis will serve as race ambassadors for the chip-timed 3.1 mile run/one mile walk. The 5K starts at the baseball stadium, weaves through downtown Baltimore and ends on the field. Participants will participate in a pre-race warm-up with the Oriole Bird, music, and other entertainment, and enjoy post-race refreshments.
Top race winners and the top fundraiser will be announced in a pre-game ceremony that evening prior to the Orioles game against the Detroit Tigers. Since moving to Oriole Park in 2013, the race has raised more than $413,000 for the Casey Cares Foundation.
Headquartered in Baltimore, Casey Cares, founded by Casey Baynes in 2000, works with families in six states throughout the Mid-Atlantic and in Washington, D.C. Typically, children will participate in six programs each year. Casey Cares works hard to provide continuous, ongoing support to families and create some fun times, positive memories and normalcy as they are impacted by diagnosis and treatment.
The proceeds from this weekend’s 5K will go to these and other Casey Cares programs: Family Festivities
Casey Cares offers families opportunities to spend time together at sporting events, movies and many other local attractions. Whenever possible, they enhance these events by providing extra goodies such as restaurant gift cards. Birthday Blasts
The organization realizes that for a critically ill child, each birthday is a special milestone celebrating life. For the children it not only marks another year, it demonstrates a great achievement. Children begin a fresh new year by receiving a surprise delivery of a toy, flowers, cookies, balloons or gift cards on their special day. This simple act of kindness delivers joy and hope.
Birthday Blast volunteers work hard to make sure these gifts are personalized for each child; sending a box of Legos to a child that loves construction, a rose bouquet to a teenage girl celebrating her sweet sixteen, or a bunch of colorful balloons to greet a four-year-old just home from chemo. Casey Cares provides Birthday Blast surprises to almost 800 critically ill children annually. Celebration Vacations
Celebration Vacations give sick children and their families a chance for a weekend of “normalcy,” a weekend where their illness is not a factor and they can just be a family. Celebration Vacations offer families time to relax and rejuvenate during customized weekend getaways. Casey Cares provides lodging, meals, and tickets to area attractions at each family’s destination of choice. Families are provided vacations ranging from a trip to Niagara Falls; Great Wolf Lodge indoor waterpark; Washington, D.C. for sightseeing, museums, and a tour of the city; and dozens of vacations to Sesame Place, Busch Gardens, Hershey Park, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Always included in the vacation packages are special touches like new
pajamas, travel snacks and activity books that add to their experience. Kami’s Jammies
Casey Cares realizes that children on extended stays at the hospital often need some extra comfort. The Kami’s Jammies Program provides new sleepwear and themed pajama parties to pediatric patients at hospitals throughout the Mid-Atlantic Area. Caring Connections
The Caring Connection Group Parties give families much needed time to meet each other, share experiences, learn from each other and develop support systems.
Planned throughout the year, Caring Connection Parties take place in varied geographical regions. Movie theaters, moon bounce gyms, pumpkin farms, popular museums and science centers, aboard sailboats, batting cages the interests are varied and each party is designed to appeal to specific age groups. During these events, families are surrounded by supportive Casey Cares staff and empathetic care givers whose children are enduring the same treatment regimens for complicated diseases. Hammy’s Heart
In memory of a Casey Cares child, Abraham “Hammy” Scrivner, Hammy’s Heart was created to offer gift cards to families who need assistance with their grocery bills. While families with a critically ill child are overwhelmed with so many other financial obligations, Hammy’s Heart helps with the basic need of feeding a family. Hammy was known for his wisdom and affectionate smile dur- ing his brain tumor battle. His caring spirit lives on through the Hammy’s Heart program, which fulfills his last heart’s desire, to provide families loving meals together.
