Torchia ap­pointed new act­ing as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent

The Boy­er­town Area School District has ap­pointed Mary­beth Torchia act­ing as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent of op­er­a­tions.

Torchia joined the Boy­er­town Area School District in July 2015 as the di­rec­tor of sec­ondary spe­cial education. She be­gan her ca­reer as a spe­cial-education teacher in the Read­ing School District. Af­ter four years there, she taught spe­cial education in the An­ti­etam School District be­fore be­com­ing the as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent in that district.

Af­ter six years with the An­ti­etam School District, Torchia ac­cepted a po­si­tion as an ele­men­tary-school prin­ci­pal with the Daniel Boone School District.

“I felt that I needed to ex­pe­ri­ence be­ing a build­ing prin­ci­pal in or­der to work bet­ter with them,” Mrs. Torchia says of her de­ci­sion. “I en­joyed my time as a prin­ci­pal and, look­ing back, I know that I did many things that I didn’t re­al­ize would make mem­o­ries for my stu­dents.”

Torchia served as the as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent and spent her fi­nal year with the Daniel Boone School District as su­per­in­ten­dent.

She at­tended Kutz­town Uni­ver­sity, where she re­ceived her bach­e­lor of sci­ence in ele­men­tary and spe­cial education. She re­ceived her master of sci­ence in ed­u­ca­tional lead­er­ship with a K-12 prin­ci­pal cer­ti­fi­ca­tion from Wilkes Uni­ver­sity. She earned her spe­cial-education su­per­vi­sor cer­tifi­cate from Millersville Uni­ver­sity and her su­per­in­ten­dent let­ter of el­i­gi­bil­ity from Ar­ca­dia Uni­ver­sity. “I love be­ing a pos­i­tive in­flu­ence for stu­dents and fam­i­lies,” Mrs. Torchia says. “Our education sys­tem can be dif­fi­cult to un­der­stand. Our role is to help fam­i­lies work through their ques­tions.”

Torchia and her hus­band, Joe, have two chil­dren. She en­joys boat­ing, ski­ing, watch­ing her daugh­ter play soc­cer, read­ing, and watch­ing col­lege foot­ball.
