Seth Smith hit a goahead home run in the seventh inning and the Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak. Chris Tillman, making his first start since June 30 after spending time on the paternity list, allowed just one run and two hits in six innings.
Eduardo Escobar’s pinch-hit single snapped a tie in the eighth inning and Eddie Rosario followed with an RBI single as the Twins beat the Yankees for just the seventh time in 26 games at Target Field. Caleb Smith made his MLB debut for the Yanks and took the loss.
The Astrros have hit more homers (151) and scored more runs (544) than any other team in the majors, but they used a bit of small ball to beat the Twins Sunday. Jake Marisnick and Jose Altuve picked up key stolen bases that led to runs in a 5-3 victory.
The Tigers scored seven runs in the first four innings and coasted from there. Gregory Polanco hit RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth innings, propelling the Pirates to their eighth win in their last 10 games. Polanco finished 4-for-4.
Tommy Pham’s three-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning for the Cardinals. Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the sixth and has homered in four straight games against the Mets, the longest streak by a Cardinals player in the history of the series.
Giancarlo Stanton slugged two homers and Dee Gordon hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning for the Marlins. Stanton has 28 homers, which puts him first in the National League.
It’s very doubtful Jon Lester will win 19 games this season as he did in the Cubs’ World Series season of 2016. He enters this game at 5-6 with an ERA of 4.25, almost two runs higher than last year. But he’s 4-1, 1.95 in five career starts in Atlanta.
