Kick up your heels in red shoes

The timing couldn’t have been better. While at the hair salon recently, I noticed that the woman sitting in the chair next to me was looking at a page in People magazine filled with photographs of red boots – and several celebrities wearing them.

Just then, a woman walked around a corner of the salon wearing a pair of rain boots. Knee-high, shiny and very much red.

Of course the customer in the chair was quick to point out how the woman was very much in step with fall trends.

Indeed, red shoes and boots are getting lots of attention this fall.

People.com names bold, bright red the must-have hue for shoes this fall.

And its Oct. 16 issue calls red boots an easy update: “Whether you go for slouchy or studded, this trendy accessory will instantly upgrade your fall

Indeed, red look.”

this fall. red: “Don’t think all reds are created equal. Instead, they run the gamut from tomato red that’s yellow-based and berry red that’s blue-based.” Featured in its gallery section: A photo of singer/new “American Idol” judge Katy Perry arriving at “Good Morning America” on Oct. 4 wearing red patent leather pumps from her own shoe line customized with microphone-shaped heels.

Not all red shoes make quite that strong a statement, of course. But they can be a fun addition to the fall wardrobe.

As Sue Marfino of ShoeFly on Elmwood Avenue told me: “People aren’t as afraid of color; they even embrace it. There can also be a lot of versions of red – from burgundy to bright red.”

Red is a very easy color to wear, she said.

“It goes with black. It goes with brown, tan and white. So even if you wear all black, you can pop on a red shoe. If you have a leopard-print dress, you can pop on a red shoe,” she said.

And, of course, red can look great with denim.

During the Fall 2017 ready-towear collections earlier this year, red shoes or boots accessorized outfits on the runways at Max Mara, Fendi and Tod’s. Now that fall has arrived, department stores and specialty retailers offer red shoes and boots in stores or on their websites in a variety of styles – from casual to dressy.

Peep-toe booties. Moccasins. Loafers. Block-heel pumps. Tall suede boots. Strappy evening styles. And, of course, rain boots. All of these come in shades of red.

In its Fall 2017 Look Book, for example, Talbots pairs red suede ankle-strap flats with dark denim five-pocket jeggings, an indigoand-ivory striped turtleneck and a red cardigan trimmed in black. On its website, Anthropologie shows Franco Sarto red velvet heels with plaid pants. Love red? This is your season. As for other trends people may be talking about this fall, just be sure to keep your eyes and ears open at the hair salon.
