The Grand Island schools have been without a school resource officer since 2013, when an officer provided by State Police was discontinued.

Trooper Chris Pyc, whose wife, Lisa, is the school board president, was the last SRO for the district and served for many years in the position. The school district wants to re-institute that position and is talking about funding the town-employed job, using a $45,000 state grant.

On Monday, Lisa Pyc recused herself from executive sessions due to a conflict of interest. She said earlier that she was not involved in the creating the position. Superintendent Brian Graham said he would like to create a full-time position filled by a retired officer, to avoid paying benefits.Currently all 25 Grand Island officers are part-time.
