Calvert NAACP lun­cheon to spot­light WWI sol­diers

The Calvert County NAACP will host a lun­cheon at 11:30 a.m. Satur­day, Nov. 3, at the Rod ‘N’ Reel Restau­rant, 155 Mears Ave. in Ch­e­sa­peake Beach.

The event, which has adopted the theme “Don’t Hate — Vote,” will com­mem­o­rate the 100th an­niver­sary of the end of World War I, as well as the 100th an­niver­sary of the NAACP’s fight to save the lives of black sol­diers falsely ac­cused of mur­der. There will also be a film that chron­i­cles the lit­tle known his­tory of the largest mur­der trial in United States mil­i­tary his­tory, which re­sulted in the ex­e­cu­tion of 19 black sol­diers and life sen­tences for 63 oth­ers, ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease.

In ad­di­tion, there will be a trib­ute to World War I pri­vates and Calvert County res­i­dents Alonzo Brown, James But­ler, Wil­lis Cur­tis, John Gross, Thorn­ton Gor­man, Joseph S. Jones and Ben­jamin Kent, black Calvert County sol­diers who lost their lives dur­ing the war.
