LFO girls' soc­cer team makes school his­tory, ad­vances to Elite 8


The Lake­view-Fort Oglethorpe girl’s soc­cer team shutout Wash­ing­ton County, 9-0, on Tues­day to ad­vance to the Elite 8 for the first time in school his­tory.

War­riors’ head coach Traci McCracken said it was a big day for her Lady War­riors, who have ex­pe­ri­enced noth­ing short of a Cin­derella sea­son. LFO de­feated Call­away, 4-1, in the sec­ond round of the state play­offs to ad­vance to the Sweet 16.

“We are go­ing to have to work hard,” she said. “But we can do it.”

McCracken’s daugh­ter and mid­fielder Abbi Mabry proved why she was wor­thy of be­ing hon­ored as the Girls Maxpreps/NSCAA Player of the Week for the State of Ge­or­gia. The se­nior mid­fielder had six goals and a dou­ble hat trick.

May­bry said she was very proud of her team for per­se­ver­ing against Wash­ing­ton County.

“I’m just re­ally happy with the way we played,” she said. “We’ve had a great sea­son.”

McCracken said it ap­peared LFO “ran away with the game.”

How­ever, the match was score­less un­til 34 min­utes into reg­u­la­tion.

Three goals within 3:00 of play – scored by May­bry, Kayla Hull and Katie Shelly– gave LFO a 3-0 lead at the end of the firs half.

Alyssa Lev­er­rett added an­other goal in the sec­ond half and May­bry iced the cake with five goals.
