LFO girls' soccer team makes school history, advances to Elite 8
The Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe girl’s soccer team shutout Washington County, 9-0, on Tuesday to advance to the Elite 8 for the first time in school history.
Warriors’ head coach Traci McCracken said it was a big day for her Lady Warriors, who have experienced nothing short of a Cinderella season. LFO defeated Callaway, 4-1, in the second round of the state playoffs to advance to the Sweet 16.
“We are going to have to work hard,” she said. “But we can do it.”
McCracken’s daughter and midfielder Abbi Mabry proved why she was worthy of being honored as the Girls Maxpreps/NSCAA Player of the Week for the State of Georgia. The senior midfielder had six goals and a double hat trick.
Maybry said she was very proud of her team for persevering against Washington County.
“I’m just really happy with the way we played,” she said. “We’ve had a great season.”
McCracken said it appeared LFO “ran away with the game.”
However, the match was scoreless until 34 minutes into regulation.
Three goals within 3:00 of play – scored by Maybry, Kayla Hull and Katie Shelly– gave LFO a 3-0 lead at the end of the firs half.
Alyssa Leverrett added another goal in the second half and Maybry iced the cake with five goals.
