Tennis: County teams battle region foes and elements

The Heritage High School boys’ tennis team shut out Northwest Whitfield, 5-0, this past Thursday.

In singles, Leo Peace beat Jordan King, 6-0, 7-5. Tim Grayson needed three sets to down Andrew Bridges 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Davis Kilgo handled Tyler Bourff, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, the team of Mark Crane and Tristan Rogers won in straight sets over Kyle McCutchen and Levi Gentry, 6-4, 6-4, while Blake Richardson and Ethan Bone defeated Brady Stroud and Trevor Ponders, 6-2, 6-0.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Generals came through with a big 3-2 victory.

Northwest won the first two singles matches. Ella Spitler defeated Caroline Horsley, 7-5, 6-0, and Sruthi Gireeshkum­a got past Emma Lokey in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

But Heritage would rally and come back to win the match and move to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Maleah McAlister blanked Isha Mittal, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. The team of Reagan Christol and Katelyn Burns shut out Olivia Elrod and Katelyn O’Ferrall, 6-0, 6-0, while Erin Hulsey and Kinsey Hargis took down Coroline Kenemer and Ashton Lowery, 6-1, 6-3.

Heritage sweeps LaFayette

The Generals moved to 4-1 overall and stayed unbeaten in Region 6-AAAA (3-0) with a 4-1 home win over the Ramblers on Friday.

The Navy-and-Red got two victories in singles, Grayson beat Noah Matthews at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while Kilgo outlasted Brad Templeton, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

In doubles, the team of Crane and Rogers needed three sets to finally put away Aaron Asbeury and Dillon Hughes, 6-3, 6-7, 10-5, while Richardson and Bone had an easier time with Andrew Long and Isaiah Southern, 6-1, 6-3.

The lone point for LaFayette (5-3, 2-1) came at No. 1 singles as Jarrod Sitton beat Peace, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1.

In an exhibition match, Heritage’s Shaw Boland and Eric Wooten joined forces for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brady Beard and Parker Rodas-Webster.

In the girls’ match, the only victory for the Lady Ramblers (5-3, 1-2) came at No. 1 singles where Madison Denny coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaylee Bright.

Lokey got past Asberri Freeman at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 7-6, while McAlister beat Madison Harris, 6-2, 6-0.

Then in doubles, Christol and Burns beat Hannah Durham and S.J. Oxford, 6-0, 6-1. The Lady Generals closed it out as Hulsey and Cadence Burton took care of Ida Scoggins and Aubrey Steadman, 6-4, 6-4.

In exhibition doubles, Heritage’s Savannah Viars and Kinsey Hargis beat Lauren Torbett and Emma Richardson, 6-1, while Heritage’s Anna Grace Skinner and Rachel Smith held off Micaela Hobbs and Macy Brewer, 6-4.

Heritage’s girls are now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the region.

Ringgold netters split region matches

The Tigers shutout Haralson County, 5-0, this past Wednesday, while the Ringgold girls suffered a 5-0 loss.

In singles matches, Tim Kim picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win. Drew Anderson claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Edward Cho also won by a 6-0,

6-0 count.

In doubles, the teamof Collin Cook and Seth Pittman pitched a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, while Richie Lawler and Jacob Anderson won 6-0, 6-1.

Individual results for the girls’ matches were not available as of press time.

Ringgold’s girls rebounded a 3-2 victory over North Murray on Friday. It was the Lady Tigers’ first win of the season.

All three victories came in singles as Laura Beth Nalley, Alissa Brunner and Isabella Sweat all picked up wins.

In boys’ action, the Tigers fell by a 3-2 count.

Anderson won at No. 2 singles, while Cook and Pittman won at No. 1 doubles.

Individual scores were not provided as of press time.
