Fort Oglethorpe Fire Department receives grand from Firehouse Subs
Fort Oglethorpe’s Fire Department was recently awarded a $30,000 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that will help the department bring in some new equipment.
During the City Council meeting on May 14, Chief Bruce Ballew asked for the City Council’s approval in accepting the grant, which will be used for extrication equipment.
“We are here for a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, an organization that takes part of the proceeds Firehouse Subs makes and gives it out as grants for the public safety,” Ballew explained. “We’re asking for your approval for a $30,000 grant and the request for electric-powered extrication equipment. This equipment will be used at wrecks and extrications other than wrecks where we may need something with extra power to lift stuff.
In addition to the grant already awarded, Ballew added that he plans on applying for an additional $10,000 grant from Georgia’s Fireworks Tax Program.
“The Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council is the overseer for it this year, and they’re taking applications,” Ballew said. “Our application is for training materials that hopefully we’ll be able to use over where we are reconstruction a training center over at station 10.”
The Council unanimously approved both requests; accepting the awarded grant, and green-lighting the department to move forward in pursuing the second one.
