Students learn about career options in area
PLAINS TWP. — Belrick Corp. founder Frank Yamrick said he met six prospective employees Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center.
The career center partnered with PA CareerLink Luzerne County, Luzerne/ Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board and the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce to present a career exploration event. A total of 66 businesses and institutions had representatives there to talk to students.
“I expect six students will come in and fill out an application,” Yamrick said.
Belrick Corp. is in Swoyersville and specializes in precision and production machining and manufacturing. Yamrick said he has 43 employees and is looking for more.
But the main purpose of Tuesday’s event was not for students to find jobs but to give them “an opportunity to speak to local employers” and learn about career choices available in the area, CareerLink Administrator Christine Jensen said.
CareerLink performed interest assessments of students and directed them to companies that fit with their interests. The agency also quizzed students to see if they could identify six products with the companies that produced the products.
Gabriella Ramirez, a 12th grade student from White Haven, said she was impressed there were “a lot of different choices in jobs.” She is studying culinary arts at the career center but also interested in getting a college degree to pursue a career in infant physical therapy.
David Joyce, a culinary arts instructor and coordinator of the career exploration event at the career center, said he hopes the event can “plant seeds” in the minds of students so they can figure out what they will do “the day after graduation.”
Theresa Rose Goodwin, left, of PA CareerLink, chats with students as they use laptops to answer questions during the annual career exploration event at the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center.
