A recent drive to register young voters proved to be a great success at Wyoming Valley West High School, according to Luzerne County officials.

Out of 187 eligible students at the school, 163 registered to vote, according to a news release county Manager David Pedri issued Monday.

Anthony Dicton, chair of the school’s social studies department, led the registration effort, the news release states. The 87 percent registration rate among eligible students qualifies the school for a Governor’s Gold Level Civic Engagement Award.

The county elections bureau launched a drive to register eligible high school students in February. Election workers sent voter registration forms and flyers to schools through the county. Pedri on Monday commended county elections director Marisa Crispell and her staff for their efforts, which resulted in 329 new voters.
