CMS Student Council kicks off school year with events, fundraisers

The Colonial - - OPINION -

Before the school year even began, the members of Colonial Middle School’s Student Council were already busy at work preparing for the new school year.

We came to school over the summer to brainstorm ideas for the upcoming year and to put our plans into action. While all the other seventh- and eighth-graders spent the mornings at home sleeping or getting ready for the pool, we were off to school with the entering sixth-graders. After a morning of giving tours and helping them learn to open lockers, everyone headed to the cafeteria where the Student Council members performed a popular song whose lyrics had been changed to describe Student Council and Colonial Middle School.

But our work was not done. Once school began, we helped guide parents during both the sixth- and seventh- and eighthgrade back-to-school nights. Both nights were a success.

Student Council is a leadership club at Colonial Middle School that any student is welcome to join. We organize the school dances and events, create fundraisers and support our school’s reward programs. Each year, the students who have been active members of Student Council for the entire year have the option to run for president, vice president, secretary or treasurer of Student Council for the upcoming year.

But the students cannot do it all alone. We have an adviser, Annette Swartz. She makes sure we accomplish what we set out to do, and we have her full support.

We also held a car wash. It was a lot of fun, and we raised $800 by washing more than 50 cars.

Student Council is now selling pink links for breast cancer awareness. Each link is a dollar and the grade that has the most links wins. All the money will be donated to breastcancer.org.

Our next fundraiser is our California Pizza Kitchen Night Wednesday, Oct. 17. Come with your family and friends to California Pizza Kitchen, where you can eat in or take out. Be sure to sKRw WKHP Rur flLHr WR PDNH surH a part of what you spend there is donated to Student Council.

No tickets will be sold at the door.

Each month, I will be writing an article to keep you up-to-date on all the latest Student Council news. Stay tuned!
