Music programs alive and well at Colonial Middle School
At Colonial Middle School, there are numerous musical groups in which students can participate. There is the Concert Band and the Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble and the String Ensemble and the Jazz Band.
This year, David O’Neill, the band teacher at the middle school, is putting together a Saxophone nuartet. This advanced group is composed of two alto sax players, one tenor and one baritone sax player. Practice for this exclusive group started three weeks ago, the week of Sept. 23.
The Concert Band is perfecting the first piece for the year, “Fanfare and Triumph,” written by James Swearingen. The other two pieces for the Colonial Middle School Winter Concert are scheduled to go out at rehearsal next week.
Audition materials for the CMS Jazz Band will go out next week and practice will start in November.
The Jazz Band is an advanced ensemble consisting of alto, tenor and baritone saxophones; trumpets; trombones; piano, guitar; bass guitar; and drums. This group of students play jazz, Latin and rock music in competitions against jazz bands from other school districts during the winter. Students must audition to participate.
The Wind Ensemble is for students from all grades with more advanced skills. This group is smaller than the full concert band, but still has more students than the Jazz Band due to the difference in style. The Wind Ensemble plays more difficult music than the standard Concert Band and also has only brass, woodwinds and percussion, much like the concert band.
The annual musical theater this year will be “Oklahoma!” Jeff Cooper, the director, has already put out audition materials for those students who enjoy singing, acting and dancing. Students find the experience of being part of the musical so much fun they come back year after year.
Practice for the multiple vocal groups at the middle school has started, also. These include the Sixth- Grade Chorus and the Seventh- and EighthGrade Chorus, as well as the Select Chorus.
There are so many opportunities for students to develop their musical abilities or to enjoy musical experiences at Colonial Middle School. As always, we can look forward to great performances by all these ensembles, for they put in amazing effort and will always do their best.
