Small-business tax cut worthless
I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with Ohio’s small-business tax cut (“Law benefits lawmakers,” Dispatch article, June 11). If the legislature opts to cut taxes with the goal of job creation, then there should be some means of quantifying the number of jobs created.
A program for new business start-ups might make sense. I don’t believe that tax avoidance leads to new hires; demand for services leads to new hires.
The legislature has given away $1.1 billion in tax revenues to small businesses with no accountability. Many, if not most, are mature businesses or sole proprietorships whose owners have no intent to hire personnel.
Most of Ohio’s accountants, doctors, and lobbyists will no doubt be glad to have the extra $12,000 in their pockets, but how many will create jobs with it?
I suspect many will plan another week in Hilton Head.
To further compound this foolishness, the legislature now seeks to balance the budget by taking money from schools and health care for the poor.
This is terrible fiscal policy and I urge legislators to correct it now.
