Purdue overwhelms Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Under first-year coach Jeff Brohm, Purdue is showing signs of life. The same can’t be said of Missouri in Barry Odom’s second season.
The Boilermakers dominated the Tigers 35-3 on Saturday and will head into Big Ten play just one victory short of last season’s total. It was the fewest points surrendered by Purdue (2-1) since a 59-0 victory over Southeast Missouri State in 2011.
Missouri (1-2) has scored a combined 16 points since its 72-43 season-opening win over Missouri State. The Tigers managed just 203 total yards.
As usual, Purdue used a two-quarterback system, and both played well. David Blough completed 22 of 28 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown. Elijah Sindelar completed 4 of 6 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Tario Fuller carried 19 times for 90 yards and a score.
NO. 5 PENN STATE 56, GEORGIA STATE 0: Trace McSorley threw a Beaver Stadium-record 85-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley for one of his four scoring strikes and also ran for a touchdown in No. 5 Penn State’s 56-0 victory over Georgia State. A week after a shaky start against Pittsburgh, McSorley bounced back in a rare prime-time game against a non-Power Five school.
NO. 10 WISCONSIN 40, BYU 6: Alex Hornibrook threw for four touchdowns and 256 yards as No. 10 Wisconsin eased to a win over BYU. The Badgers (3-0) met little resistance as they put the game away in the first half and led 24-6 at halftime. Hornibrook missed on only one pass all day.
MINNESOTA 34, MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE 3: Kobe McCrary rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns and Jacob Huff returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown to lead Minnesota to a victory over Middle Tennessee State. Rodney Smith rushed for 107 yards in the first half before leaving with an injury and Conor Rhoda completed 11 of 18 passes for 122 yards in his first game since being named the full-time starter for the Golden Gophers (3-0), who wore all gold for the first time since 1974.
IOWA 31, NORTH TEXAS 14: Nate Stanley threw for 197 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Iowa overwhelmed North Texas to finish the non-conference season unbeaten. Freshman Ivory KellyMartin added 74 yards rushing and two TDs for the Hawkeyes (3-0), who played most of the second half without running backs Akrum Wadley and James Butler.
RUTGERS 65, MORGAN STATE 0: Freshman quarterback Johnathan Lewis ran for four touchdowns and passed for another in parttime action, and Rutgers defeated Morgan State to snap an 11-game losing streak. Lewis took only five first-half snaps and didn’t lead a full drive until late in the third quarter, but the highly touted recruit gave a potential glimpse of the future in the victory.
NORTHWESTERN 49, BOWLING GREEN 7: Northwestern broke away from an early 7-7 tie with 42 unanswered points to defeat Bowling Green at Ryan Field. Running back Justin Jackson scored on three short runs while quarterback Clayton Thorson had two touchdown passes as the Wildcats (2-1) bounced back from last week’s 41-17 loss at Duke.
