2 prison work­ers killed in in­mates’ es­cape try

EL­IZ­A­BETH CITY, N.C. — In­mates at the Pasquotank Cor­rec­tional In­sti­tu­tion in North Carolina started a fire on Thurs­day as part of an un­suc­cess­ful es­cape at­tempt, re­port­edly killing two em­ploy­ees and in­jur­ing eight other peo­ple.

The episode be­gan around 3:30 p.m. when in­mates set fire to the prison’s sewing plant and sev­eral tried to flee, the North Carolina Depart­ment of Pub­lic Safety said.

The prison, which had 729 in­mates on Thurs­day, was locked down, as were nearby schools.
