Man shot relative during robbery, police say
Columbus police were searching Thursday night for a 21-year-old man on a murder charge for the fatal shooting of a relative during a botched robbery at a South Side home.
Anthony Craig Dean, whose last known address was on the South Side, has a warrant issued for his arrest after he went into a relative’s home in the 900 block of Higbee Drive South about 1:20 a.m. Thursday and attempted to rob 44-yearold Erick T. Bellomy at gunpoint, according to an affidavit.
“Mr. Dean and Mr. Bellomy got into a physical altercation” over property when Dean shot Bellomy in the chest, police reported, citing witnesses.
Police were called to the home by a next door neighbor. Bellomy, who collapsed to the floor, was pronounced dead at the residence by a medic at 1:33 a.m.
Police said the two men were related but didn’t divulge their family connection.
“At this time, the suspect is not in custody and should be considered armed and dangerous,” said Sgt. Jeff Strayer, who oversees the third-shift homicide squad, in a statement.
Bellomy’s death marks the 101st homicide in Columbus this year. At the same time last year, the city had 75 homicides.
Anyone with information about Dean’s whereabouts is asked to call Columbus police at 614-645-4730 or 911.
