A serious turn

The Columbus Dispatch - - Front Page - By Michael O’Sullivan

The holidays just got real — but not in terms of Santa Claus. In a season when cinemas are typically laden with escapist goodies such as “Aquaman,” “Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” this year stands out for the way the culture wars have invaded the silver screen.

And the topicality feels, for better or worse, especially urgent.

But why celebrate the serious over the silly? Because the 10 movies listed on Page F3 grapple with race, war, power, politics, gender and sexuality in deeply emotional — and even entertaining — ways.
