their work, you’re not entirely sure whether Stuart is taking the protagonist’s side, lightly mocking him, or engaging in full-on satire. “My grandmother took pride in her clothes, now little girls all look like hoes,” sings Stuart as a disapproving good ol’ boy. “A Sunday dress to show off their crack, don’t blame Jesus if he don’t come back.”
The flip side is one ripped from the headlines: “Jihadi John” was inspired by the British Muslim extremist, part of a terrorist cell nicknamed the Beatles for their accents. Stuart picks his story apart, trying to understand the blood lust and fanaticism behind a barbarous killer, while slyly referencing Beatles hits on each passing chorus. In all, it’s a winning 7-inch slab that proves Stuart’s tongue-incheek or comedy songs are increasingly on par with his straight work.

that is increasingly blurring the lines between hiphop and electronic dance music, Daz Rinko emerged earlier this year with the jazzy earworm “Angel.” Now he welcomes summer with his debut mixtape, “Lifted,” featuring a variety of up-and-coming producers making rap tunes you can dance to. Highlight track “Vibe Wit Me” echoes the “Angel” recipe but with an even more insistent jackin’ beat and an urgent flow from Rinko (“Sorry for the delay, but the rent’s due, got a baby on the way”). With a vocal quality something like Dizzee Rascal meets ‘90s one-hit wonder SkeeLo and a hip-house sound reminiscent of Jungle Brothers or Rob Base, Daz Rinko is stepping up as one to watch in Memphis and beyond.
