Third Man Records to release Johnny Cash live album
Third Man Records wants to take listeners back to 1973, for “A Night To Remember” with Johnny Cash.
The Nashville-based label teams with Sony Music and the Cash estate to debut a live double album from the Man In Black, originally recorded May 5, 1973, at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.
Called “A Night To Remember,” Third Man — a label co-owned by Jack White that’s known for collectible vinyl releases — debuts the album via its vault subscription series. The package includes:
A double vinyl LP multi-track recording from the archived Cash gig;
seven-inch single featuring unreleased contributions from Ruston Kelly and a “mystery artist” to “Forever Words,” the 2018 compilation album highlighting Cash lyrics and poetry; a DVD showcasing behind-thescenes footage from Cash’s “A Night To Remember” performance.
“A master class in a show if there ever was one, this production holds up with Cash’s previous live albums while still exposing a side to the Man in Black not displayed on his canonical sets from San Quentin and Folsom Prison,” a news release said.
The unearthed Cash performance stems from “A Week To Remember,” a concert series curated by Clive Davis in 1973 to highlight Columbia Records artists. Bruce Springsteen, the Staple Singers and Earth, Wind, Fire highlighted the week-long run at Ahmanson Theatre.
The album includes cuts of Cash staples “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk The Line,” as well as guest appearances from June Carter Cash, Carl Perkins and Larry Gatlin.
A Third Man vault subscription costs $65 quarterly and $240 annually, per thirdmanstore.com. Deadline to subscribe for the “A Night To Remember” package is July 31.
