Michelle Pel­lay-Walker lost her lit­tle poo­dle, Chi-Chi, in 1984. “Lost,” of course, is a eu­phemism. The dog died, as, in­evitably, dogs do. (As we all do, what­ever our species, from 24-hour mayfly to cen­turies-old co­ral or sponge.)

Chi-Chi was an 11th birth­day present for Michelle, so the girl knew she likely would out­live the poo­dle — and she has, by 33 years, to date. That’s a long time, yet prob­a­bly a day hasn’t gone by that Pel­lay-Walker hasn’t thought about the “cute lit­tle fluff­ball” she re­mem­bers as the other half of “a beau­ti­ful friend­ship.”
