FedEx Freight boss Ducker re­tir­ing af­ter 43 years

Michael L. “Mike” Ducker, the FedEx Freight chief whose ten­ure at FedEx stretches back to the com­pany’s early days, is re­tir­ing Aug. 15, the com­pany an­nounced Mon­day.

Ducker has been pres­i­dent and chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer of Mem­phis-based FedEx Corp.’s less than truck­load unit since 2014.

FedEx said his suc­ces­sor would be named later.

“For more than 43 years, Mike Ducker has an­swered the call when FedEx asked him to lead in each new op­por­tu­nity and role,” FedEx chair­man and CEO Fred­er­ick W. Smith said in a re­lease.

“Whether in Europe, Asia or the Amer­i­cas, Mike has been a model of our Peo­ple-Ser­vice-Profit phi­los­o­phy. His lead­er­ship and strate­gic in­stinct have been in­te­gral in grow­ing the global busi­ness we have to­day,” Smith said.

Smith added, “There is no way to pin­point his great­est ac­com­plish­ment, but I can tell you it is hard to imag­ine FedEx with­out Mike Ducker, and that is the mark of a truly trans­for­ma­tional leader.”

Ducker served a term as chair­man of the U.S. Cham­ber of Com­merce start­ing in 2015, and he was one of FedEx’s lead­ing voices pro­mot­ing a free trade agenda as Pres­i­dent Trump swept into of­fice.

Chat­tanooga na­tive Ducker joined FedEx Ex­press, then known as Fed­eral Ex­press, in 1975 and served in front­line op­er­a­tions at the Mem­phis hub.

The overnight de­liv­ery com­pany started op­er­a­tions at Mem­phis In­ter­na­tional Air­port in 1973.

Ducker rose through the U.S. ground op­er­a­tions ranks in the 1980s and took a se­ries of in­ter­na­tional as­sign­ments start­ing in 1991 as vice pres­i­dent of South­ern Europe, based in Mi­lan, Italy.

He also served as vice pres­i­dent of the South Pa­cific and Mid­dle East re­gion and se­nior vice pres­i­dent of the Asia/ Pa­cific re­gion be­fore re­turn­ing to the U.S. in 1999 as ex­ec­u­tive vice pres­i­dent/ pres­i­dent, in­ter­na­tional.

He was chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer at FedEx Ex­press for five years start­ing in 2009.
