Vols offer 3-star QB prospect after 4-star recruit commits to SEC rival
Tennessee's quarterback recruiting board lost one target and added another on Sunday.
Four-star quarterback Sam Horn, a Vols target, pledged to Missouri.
Meanwhile, Tayven Jackson, a three-star pro-style quarterback, tweeted that he received an offer from Tennessee.
Horn, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound prospect from Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia, would have been a nice consolation prize for Tennessee after the Vols failed to land five-star instate quarterback Ty Simpson, who committed to Alabama on Friday.
Horn is ranked as the No. 6 pro-style quarterback prospect in the 2022 class by the 247Sports Composite. He's a top-100 prospect.
Horn also is a standout baseball player. His commitment marks a big victory for Missouri, which last signed a four-star quarterback in the 2019 class in Connor Bazelak, who became the Tigers' starter in 2021. Missouri's last top-100 quarterback signee was Drew Lock in 2015.
Jackson's offer list includes several Power 5 schools.
He's a 6-5, 185-pound prospect from Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana.
Tennessee's other quarterback targets include Destin Wade and Tevin Carter, a pair of three-star instate prospects. Additionally, four-star quarterback Kaden Martin will announce his commitment on Wednesday. Martin is the son of former Vols quarterback Tee Martin, who was an assistant at Tennessee in 2019-20 and is now the Baltimore Ravens' wide receivers coach.
Martin also is a college baseball prospect. His finalists are Tennessee, Miami, Arizona State and Oregon.
Tennessee's 2022 class is coach Josh Heupel's first chance to show his chops in improving the program's quarterback recruiting.
During the Jeremy Pruitt era, the Vols signed three-star quarterbacks J.T. Shrout and Brian Maurer and fourstar quarterbacks Harrison Bailey and
Kaidon Salter. A lack of quarterback development became a pitfall for Pruitt.
As an assistant or head coach, Heupel
has coached standout quarterbacks such as Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Missouri's Lock and Central Florida's Dillon Gabriel.
