“We’ll make it work”
Public works director Sam B. Walton steps down after a 41-year career with the city. In 1956 he began work in the city shop at the request of then Mayor Jack Elliott. In 1966 he transferred to the gas department. In 1970 he was transferred to the water and sewer department and made superintendent. He went on to oversee the streets and gas departments and the shop. In 1974 he was promoted to public works director, supervising all utility departments. His friends and co-workers gave him the 1970 city-issued truck that he has driven since it was brand new.
