Pub­lic works di­rec­tor Sam B. Wal­ton steps down af­ter a 41-year ca­reer with the city. In 1956 he be­gan work in the city shop at the re­quest of then Mayor Jack El­liott. In 1966 he trans­ferred to the gas de­part­ment. In 1970 he was trans­ferred to the wa­ter and sewer de­part­ment and made su­per­in­ten­dent. He went on to over­see the streets and gas de­part­ments and the shop. In 1974 he was pro­moted to pub­lic works di­rec­tor, su­per­vis­ing all util­ity de­part­ments. His friends and co-work­ers gave him the 1970 city-is­sued truck that he has driven since it was brand new.
