Man allegedly shoplifts computers, flees into woods
A shoplifter was chased by Covington Police officers into the woods behind Wal-Mart after he allegedly tried to steal two desktop computers.
The black male, whose name is not currently being released, had a desktop computer and printer loaded into his SUV when he reentered the store for a second computer, said CP Detective D. J. Seals.
While trying to leave with the second computer, employees became aware of the situation. A Covington Police officer was in the parking lot helping a customer enter his locked car when the store reported the incident. The officer attempted to make contact with the suspect, but he fled behind the store and into the woods
Other officers, including Seals, were in the area and began to patrol the other side of the woods. The suspect emerged a few minutes later, but backtracked when he spotted the officers, Seals said.
The man was pursued back into the woods where he was soon found stuck in some extremely thick briars. Seals and other officers drew their sidearms and ordered the man out of the briars.
The suspect complained about chest pains and the EMS was called, but they deemed him fit to be transferred to the Newton County Dentition Center.
The suspect should be charged with felony shoplifting, Seals said.
